Laurel has always lived as an ordinary girl - but now something is happening to her. Something magical.
In this enchanting tale of magic, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

When I saw this in my school library, I don't know why, but I just had to have it. I think part of me went, oh look at that pretty cover! but another part of me really wanted it for some reason, and yesterday, when I was browsing through my old posts I came across it in one of my wishlists posts! I am glad to say that this book didn't disappoint. I loved it!
I loved the storyline, characters, the writing style, just everything!
The storyline included faeries and I was actually quite excited about that part, since I'd never read a novel with faeries in it, and what the synopsis states is true, faeries are not what you think they are going to be in this novel!
The characters are well written and play great parts in the story, but my favourites probably have to be Laurel (the main character) and Tamani. Laurel had just the right personality and I really liked her from the start. She's brave, loyal and a faery! I do not really want to go into much detail about Tamani, because if I do I will probably reveal spoilers.

I give this 5/5 because I just found it a great read. I really, really, really hope you will read this, I would say it is a must! I'm actually going to order the sequels, that is how good it is!

Rachel xx :)

PS: To everyone out there that has read this book, are you Team David or Team Tamani? I'm Team Tamani! :D

  3. Hi Rachel,

My name is William Dye. I wrote a novel called Mungus that is available in paperback, on the Kindle, and on the Nook (99 cents in the ebook format). I was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing it. It is a young adult fantasy novel of about 70,000 words. The story centers around a young orphan named Walter Higgins who goes down to a planet that he is unfamiliar with, called Mungus. Please send me an email if you are interested.

  8. RESENT: book review request by award-winning author

    Dear Rachel,

I'm an award-winning author with a new book of fiction. Ugly To Start
With is a series of thirteen interrelated stories about teen life
published by West Virginia University Press in November
    of 2011.

Can I interest you in reviewing it?

I wrote to you this past fall, but lost much of my AOL mail from that
time, thanks to overwhelming SPAM. If you replied, my apologies.

Perhaps you now have more time to consider a book review or Q&A?

My book's only 160 pages short. The writing is easy and open, and all
the stories are interconnected--same hero and story arc throughout. It
reads like a brisk novel in the form of stories.

If you write me back at johnmcummings@aol.com, I can email you a PDF of my book. If you require a bound copy, please ask, and I will forward your reply to my publisher. Or you can write directly to Abby Freeland at:

    Abby.Freeland@mail.wvu.edu

My publisher, I should add, can also offer your readers a free excerpt of my book through a link from your blog to my publisher's website:

Here’s what Jacob Appel, celebrated author of
Dyads and The Vermin Episode, says about my new collection: "In Ugly to Start With, set in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Cummings tackles the challenges of boyhood adventure and family conflict in a taut, crystalline style that captures the triumphs and tribulations of small-town life. He has a gift for transcending the particular experiences to his characters to capture the universal truths of human affection and suffering--emotional truths that the members of his audience will recognize from their own experiences of childhood and adolescence.”

My short stories have appeared in more than seventy-five literary journals, including North American Review, The Kenyon Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Chattahoochee Review. Twice I have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize. My short story "The Scratchboard Project" received an honorable mention in The Best American Short Stories 2007.

I am also the author of the nationally acclaimed coming-of-age novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Philomel Books, Penguin Group, 2009), winner of The Paterson Prize for Books for Young Readers (Grades 7-12) and one of ten books recommended by USA TODAY.
