May I borrow some more?

Monday 9 February 2015
Okay, here's the deal. I love lending out books. To me, grilling your friend on what they like in a book (or what they think they'd like in a book if they're a non-reader) and going through your bookshelf to find suitable choices then forcing them to borrow one (or a few) is a great pastime. So I really don't get when people say they hate lending out books. While I'm here like:

They're over there like:

Or, in extreme cases:

I'm a firm lender-outer (let's pretend that's a word and roll with it). I love the fact that more people than just me are reading and loving that copy of a book. There's another crack in the spine, more thumb marks on the pages. The story is being shared, just like I feel stories should be.

And if the book comes back with a small coffee stain on a page or a small tear at one corner? It's only proof! Proof that more people have flicked through it and loved it and given it their attention. Proof that the story has been read.

Also, what's more smile-inducing than when you've picked out a winner for your friend - a book they really enjoyed? You feel like a five star librarian!

Are you a lender-outer? Or not so much? Why?

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

  1. I AM A LENDER-OUTER but less so than I used to be - the people I lend books to know I expect them to return it in the condition I gave it to them. IT'S DA RULES.

  2. I am a lender outer - but very, VERY rarely.
The fact is I have to really trust someone when they borrow my books - too many times I've lent them out and they've come back with some serious damage.
If I lend out a book, I will give it in a condition that I expect it to be returned in.

  3. I don't really lend books but that's more because I can't. Even though I want to fling all of my favourite books at my friends none of them really read. To be honest, I'd love it if I could give away books and have extended debates about them, but unfortunately they just don't read. One of them sort of does but he's never been interested in any of my recommendations so I've kind of given up. Anyway, great post and it's always nice to see someone who spreads the love of books!

    1. Ugh, that's annoying! You should lock them all in the room with your bookshelf and not let them out till they've chosen a book to take home and read! ;P

    2. Hmm, not a bad idea. I may get arrested for it but it'll be worth it!

  4. I once lent a friend a book and her dog ate it, like full-out chewed up, so much that it was unrecognisable. After that, I became more wary haha! ;D I do lend out books to my one friend if she wants to read it and she's really careful with them, so that's a good thing! My other two friends don't read much and one of my other friends reads a LOT but she only really reads New Adult. But mainly, I don't really like loaning books because people don't generally return them in the best condition and I like my books being in their best condition haha! Lovely post, Rachel! <3

    1. Ooops! I never actually thought dogs were like that until last week when I had to distract my puppy from going near one of my library books! I've never ever had trouble with my older dog near books though! Thank you!!<3

  6. I'm kind of in the middle about lending out books... I don't mind if they're not favourites, but if they are, I'm reluctant to let them leave the house- especially signed copies! Those aren't going anywhere! I just feel that books can be so personal, and I've lent out some I have not yet got back.. It depends, haha! :) Great Post, Rachel! I admire your generous book-sharing spirit very much!

    1. I totally understand that - I might even be the tootsiest bit iffy if it was one of my favourite books and it was signed!
