Novella Review: Last Off

Monday, 6 May 2013
Author: Laughton Chandler
Edition: St. Ambrose Press epub
Released: January 1st 2013
Pages: 108 approx.

Four young stowaways — illegal passengers, below even the 3rd class — find themselves on the R.M.S. Titanic, the grandest ocean liner in the world on her maiden voyage. At first unknown to each other, hailing from four different countries, they begin to learn about each others’ pasts as they bide their time in the bowels of the ship, united in their hopes of making a new life in America. When disaster strikes, what will become of them? Who, if any, will be able to escape the epic tragedy Walter Lord described as ‘the death of a small town’?

When I was contacted by the author to ask whether or not I wanted to review this novella, I wasn't sure I would. Yes, stories about the Titanic always intrigue me - because, ultimately, we know many of the characters fates and we want to see how the author handles such a delicate topic - but what made this one special enough that I would give it a go? Though, eventually, curiosity did get the better of me and I started reading - realising, after the final page, this book was completely what I expected and what I didn't.

I think I'll start with the criticism side of things first. One of the main issues I had with this book was the lack of action and terror. I suspected that the characters would all escape their make-shift "cabin" and end up fighting for their lives as the ship began sinking. I was expecting running, screaming, swimming, climbing... All four boys trying to get to the top-most deck of the ship. However, two of the characters left less than half-way through the book - to see what the all the noise was about - and didn't return (I'm sure I can guess what happened to them but I would have liked the author to have focused on those two more so I could have known exactly what they went through) while the other two were sealed in and trapped. The majority of the story follows the two trapped boys and how they cope being stuck. It just seemed to me like they acted too calm at times and not at all realistically for being in such a desperate situation.

However, I did find myself rooting for the boys from the first lurch and pitch of the ship. Especially Hugh... I really liked how the author created four very different, contrasting personalities and how each boy had a back story. Though the characters weren't quite developed enough in the respect that I empathised with them to an extreme level, I did feel for them deeply and want them to make it out alive. Of course, it did have a bittersweet ending but what else can you expect from a book set on the Titanic? I did have a lump in my throat by the end. The boys were so young - thirteen/fourteen - and all with such big dreams of making a better life for themselves in New York and they had to go through that. I just sat in silence for a moment once I had read the final page. The Epilogue crushed me.

I really like the significance of the title Last Off. It's perfect and goes with the mood of the book well. The scene with Hugh when he remembers what Paddy told him made me almost tearful. It was an extremely admirable and sweet thing to do. I definitely think I rooted for him the most but all the boys were likeable in their own way. Shy Max, book-loving Hugh, trusting Emile and the leader-like figure of the group, Paddy. So, overall, though this wasn't the best book, the ending did stir up enough emotion from me and the characters were likeable enough that I would say it wasn't a bad read at all. Bittersweet definitely, but not bad.

THREE STARS FOR LAST OFF!
Thanks go out to the author for providing me with a review copy of this book!

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: Have any of you read a book set on the Titanic? What did you think? Do you like the sound of this one?

Showcase Sunday #16

Sunday, 5 May 2013
Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Vicky over at Books, Biscuits & Tea where we showcase all of our recent book grabs.

The books I've got to show you today I've managed to acquire over quite a few weeks. Most are review books (and surprise review books at that!) which I will probably get on to reading and reviewing at the beginning of June when my exams are over. So, without further-a-do, here are the books! :)

For Review *courtesy of Random House and HarperCollins*

This one looks SO good and I still can't believe I hadn't heard of it until it came through the post. It's dystopian and, by the sound of it, a unique one. YAY! ;)

I hadn't actually heard of this one at all until I looked it up on Goodreads just this morning. It's certainly intriguing... I'll need to wait and see what I think!

I'm really excited to start this one because I really enjoyed the first book, The Selection and have been eagerly awaiting this one for a while now. Plus, the cover. How gorgeous is that cover?! *.*

I've finally got a copy of The Hobbit! Woo! I don't know why I haven't read this yet but I'm glad I've got the chance to now! I can't wait *squeals with delight*. I think this is the new cover that came out when the movie did... it's really rather lovely. :)

Ohmygosh! This book sounds AMAZING! Another dystopian, but seriously - it sounds phenomenal! So, yeah, you could say I'm going into this with high expectations! ;)

Purchased *courtesy of a gift voucher and my lovely mum ;)*

This was, put simply, amazing. To see my review, click here. xD

I'm currently reading this one and really enjoying it. I'm just over half way and am extremely uncertain about who I want Lena to end up with. Both boys haven't really been affecting me at all so far... Hope that changes! :P

So that's all for me this week. What about you? Leave links and I'll stop by as soon as I can! :)

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: Just put up a poll - check it out. ^.^

Mini Reviews: The Selection & Throne of Glass!

Saturday, 4 May 2013
First off, I do actually have a good reason for reviewing both The Selection and Throne of Glass in the same post. One, I read them quite close together and am surprised I haven't found the time to review either of them considering the amount of time each has been out for. Two, each reminds me of the other - for instance, I find the love triangles so similar that I usually mix up which love interests go where and due to this, the books just seem to merge together whenever I think about them. Three, even though I did enjoy both of them, I feel like the hype surrounding each book made me go into both books with ridiculously high expectations. :3 So, yeah. Let's get to it!

Author: Keira Cass
My Edition: HarperCollins eBook
Released: June 7th 2012
Series No: The Selection #1
Pages: 327 approx.

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself - and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

This book had been on my wishlist for quite some time and so when I finally managed to get my hands on a copy, I was super excited to start. Luckily, since this was the first book I read out of the two and so had nothing to compare it with, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like how the author has written a story with a fresh take on the dystopian genre. A unique and unusual plot is a big must-have for me and so I'm glad this book delivered. The world-building was also enjoyable. I was constantly intrigued by all the 'Castes' and really wanted to know more about how they had come to be that way. I'm hoping to get more information in the sequel! The main character, America, was caring and sarcastic and so turned out to be an enjoyable narrator also. The only thing that lowered my liking for her was during the ending when I got the impression that she was going to start... 'toying' with both love interests. I really hope this isn't the case because both of them care for her deeply and it would just be plain unfair and a little vain on her part. :3 Speaking of the love triangle, I really couldn't make up my mind for the majority of the book who I liked better. Maxon or Aspen. One minute I liked one over the other and then two scenes later I'd like the other one more. If I had to pick though, I would say Maxon. Another character I liked was May - she had such an adorable personality! I've actually got the sequel sitting next to me which I need to read and review and I can't wait to get started!

FOUR STARS FOR THE SELECTION! :D

Author: Sarah J. Maas
My Edition: Bloomsbury Paperback
Released: August 2nd 2012
Series No: Throne of Glass #1
Pages: 404 approx.

Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

Now this is where I'm going to have to start scratching my brain since I read this book a few months ago. Anyway, I'll try my best. The synopsis of Throne of Glass creates a great premise - instantly you can see the potential in the storyline. So when I found out that the main character was going to have to compete in a serious of challenges throughout the book to become the Royal assassin, I was rather excited. I thought it was a great idea! But, alas, it just didn't turn out that way. Where I had wanted description upon description of what was happening in each challenge and action scenes upon action scenes, I just didn't get that. Or, more specifically, I just didn't get enough of that. The pacing of the book was also a little off for me. I got quite bored at parts throughout the book and my concentration would drift quite a bit before I forced myself to re-read and then continue on. However, it wasn't all bad. I did enjoy the characters! Celaena was definitely very multi-dimensional - she had contrasting sides to her personality. On one hand she was as hard as nails but then she also had a more gentle, vulnerable side to her too which I enjoyed whenever it appeared. She also liked to read which is, obviously, a bonus! ;) Like with The Selection, I'm not completely sure where I stand on the love triangle. However, we didn't really find out too much about Chaol (aka. Captain Westfall) in this book so I can't fairly choose. So, overall, Throne of Glass was a likeable enough read but I just wished it had focused more on the action aspect and the challenges rather than the other sub-plots.
THREE STARS FOR THRONE OF GLASS! :)

Have you read either - or both - of these books? Were your views similar or completely different to my own? Do you prefer Maxon or Aspen? Chaol or Dorian?

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: My maths exam is over! Woooooooo! Definitely calls for a party (even if I didn't do so good)... :3 ;)

April Round Up and Favourites!

Thursday, 2 May 2013
Hey all! For a while now I've been thinking about doing a monthly favourites and round up post and today I've finally decided to do exactly that. However, today's post is more or less a trial run to see whether or not I'll continue doing it. Tell me what you think! Also, since I've been super busy this month, I've only managed to read one book and so there won't be much variation in my favourites, hehe. ;)
Click cover to read review! :)

Favourite Read of April:
Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. I know this is the only book I've read this month *sad face* but I'm pretty sure it would still be my favourite even if I had read more! This book was just the perfect conclusion to The Infernal Devices series. Even though I didn't quite love the ending, the trilogy on a whole was FANTASTIC and I can not recommend it enough! :)

Favourite Character:
William Herondale *sigh*. Must I say more? Snarky, gorgeous, reads books, fights demons... Doubt I need to go on! ;) <3

Favourite Side Character:
Cicely Herondale. Another Herondale, eh? You must all think I'm obsessed! But seriously. Cicely was a really admirable character in Clockwork Princess and I just loved her personality. She was brave, stubborn, snarky... quite like her brother actually. That's what made their relationship both amusing and adorable - they were too much alike. :P

Favourite Cover:
I'm going to cheat here and say Requiem by Lauren Oliver. I'm currently reading this book but since I started it in April, I'm going to let myself get away with it. ;) The cover I have is the UK edition, I think - the one with a silhouette of a girl - who I'm strongly suspecting is Lena - looking out over a lake. I just LOVE the blue tones used and, overall, it's just a super captivating cover. It really helps reinforce the underlying theme of freedom which I like too.

Favourite/Most Visited Author Website:
Cassandra Clare's of course. I mean, where else was I meant to go after finishing book three in her Infernal Devices trilogy?! I was on there looking for Will fan art, of course. ;) Just kidding. I'm always on the lookout for extras on her books and news on the City of Bones movie - which looks phenomenal! - so that's one of the websites I usually end up looking through. xD

Favourite Goodreads Group:
Teen Bloggers. I've literally only been a part of this group for a few days but I just love it so much already, I feel like I have to share it! The lovely, amazing, fantabulous Ruby over at Feed Me Books Now! co-hosts the group with three other wonderful bloggers (you can find more about them all here!) and there are just so many fun conversations you can contribute to and talk to other bloggers in! Plus, it's really nice to meet bloggers my own age! :D

So, there you go. April's round up and favourites. What did you think? Obviously I'll be able to put in more 'Favourites' categories next time because I'll have read more than just the one book, aha. ;)

Anywho.

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: If you want, I could also make it a monthly meme where I can post up a Linky at the bottom of the post so people can put a link to their Monthly Round Up and Favourites post? o_O

MY REVIEW:

I'm pretty sure everyone in the book blogging community knows how much I love this series (and of my obsession with Will Herondale ;D), so it's safe to say I had the highest of high expectations going into the third and final book in this trilogy. However, I'm having trouble. Ever since I've finished this book I've felt... muddled. I can't organise my feelings in the slightest. My heart has been twisted in every which way and has finally broken in two - the emotion in this book too much!

It's always sad when a series ends. There's no more of your favourite characters, of that exciting storyline... You just grieve. Well, I do anyway. Ever since finishing it yesterday all I have done is think about this book all day and still I grieve. This trilogy has been a rollercoaster of gut-wrenching emotions and now that it's finally over, I feel lost. What will I do without my most favourite character in this entire world: Will! :'(

I'm pretty sure this review will be more of a ramble than anything else but still, I need to do this. Get it all out of my system. Why on earth did it have to end like that?! The one thing I needed was a satisfying and well tied up ending, and I didn't get that! I just didn't get that! *recollects self* It was both breath-takingly beautiful and horrifyingly frustrating! I LOVE Will - and always will - and even though Jem hasn't been my favourite and has, admittedly, more got on my nerves than anything else, I still wished him a happy ending because he really is an adorably sweet character. But the way this book turned out? AHHHHHHHHHHH!

First off, please don't be offended if what I say you don't agree with. I really don't want any of you to hate me for eternity. :P It's just, this is what I've taken from the story and what will always niggle at me. Just my opinion. So here we go, The Ending. I could have felt satisfied if I didn't feel like Tessa had settled. I've always had the impression that while she has loved Jem, she has always been in love with Will - if that makes sense. It's just the fact that I got the feeling she was playing a little with Will and I felt it was really unfair to him - and Jem in a way. She really couldn't make up her mind who she loved more and came to the conclusion she loved them the exact same. I just felt like that was... false. Or just plain unfair. I wouldn't want the person I loved to also be in love equally with someone else. Would anyone really? Truthfully? It just hurts me on Will's behalf to know that.

There was also the whole thing about how if Jem had died then Will would not have pursued Tessa because he felt like he would be gaining something from Jem's death. And he didn't want that. But then Jem done that in the Epilogue. The one thing Will never would have. He pursued Tessa and got her after Will's death. Even though I know Will would have wanted Tessa to get together with Jem if that's what made her truly happy, I still can't wrap my head around it because I'm just so angry. I just feel like it was betraying Will in some way. But I suspect this has affected me way more than anyone else since I am the biggest die-hard Will fan ever. :P

So here I am, as muddled as ever. I'm irritated and angry but also can't deny that I still loved this book with all my heart and have enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster from book one. Tessa, Will and Jem will always be in my heart. But so will the ending and epilogue. They will niggle at me constantly. Anywho, let's talk about the characters and their developments. Once again I loved the relationship between Will and Jem, it was so deep and so meaningful it took my breath away. Jem as sweet as sugar and well, Will? Just as smart-mouthed and swoon-worthy as ever. But nobody would want him any differently. ;) Tessa? She finally became the strong, kick-ass heroine I've always wanted her to be. Though these three were definitely a highlight, so were the other side characters and their sub-plots. I loved Cecily - just as stubborn, brave and reckless as her brother so how could I not? Plus her relationship with Gabriel? Awwwwwww. There was also Magnus Bane, Sophie, Gideon, Charlotte, Henry... Every single one of them holding a piece of my heart. I love them all. Oh, almost forgot! How much did you cry in the epilogue when Will's death was being described? My heart just shattered. :'(

So I think I should stop talking now. I apologize for this extremely long ramble and don't blame you if you just skipped to the end. :P Anyway, I can't recommend this series enough and it is now my most favourite trilogy EVER. It has a thrilling storyline, with constant intriguing and eventful side plots as well as a vast range of characters that you can easily love. The relationships between them are all beautifully written and I can't thank Cassandra Clare enough for bringing them into my life. Will will always have the greatest hold over my heart and I'm pretty sure that will never change - he will always be at the top of my book boyfriends ;) - but Tessa was also the perfect heroine to lead these three books. I can't think of anyone more perfect. Brilliant series by a brilliant author. Loved every minute of it.

FIVE BEAUTIFUL STARS FOR A BEAUTIFUL SERIES! <3

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: I sound like an emotional wreck in this post but I'm sure we can all relate, aha. ;)
PPS: My exams have officially started! Eeeeek! :3

Follow Friday #9

Friday, 5 April 2013
Hey everyone! I really want to do a post today but since I don't have too much time to spare I thought a Follow Friday post was in order. Plus, I haven't done one in a while! :)

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. Every week there are two featured blogs and a fun question to answer, so head on over to join in!

Qu: Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?

The only book that comes to mind for this question is Seraphina by Rachel Hartman. I was sent this book as a surprise review book a while ago now. I didn't actually think it looked like my sort-of thing when I first read the back of the book but I decided it was only fair to give it a go because the publishers had graciously sent me a copy. When I read it I was, in fact, proved right. I really didn't enjoy it - I just had no patience with the slow pacing or the writing style. However, so many other people LOVED it and I don't even know anyone who thinks about it the way I do!

Have you read this book? Did you love it or end up not enjoying it like me?

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: If you follow leave a comment so I can visit your own blog! I'll try and stop by as soon as I can! :)

Review: Blood Red Road

Wednesday, 27 March 2013
Author: Moira Young
Edition: Scholastic Paperback
Released: 3rd January 2012
Series: Dust Lands #1
Pages: 417 approx.

In the Dustlands, you fight or you die.

There are no laws in Saba's world. When her twin brother is stolen, she pursues his captors through a wild, wasted land. She must become a warrior to survive. On this dangerous road she can trust no one. Not even the handsome thief who saves her life - and steals her heart.

MY REVIEW:

When I first heard of this book, I'd been super excited. It'd sounded absolutely perfect for a dystopian lover like myself, and there had been so much hype surrounding it that I couldn't wait to buy my own copy. Even though, admittedly, it did take me a couple of tries to finally get into the book, I am so glad I did because it turned out to be one amazing, action-packed adventure that I ended up really loving.

The reason it took me a couple attempts to get into this book is simply because of its format. It was certainly very alien to me to start off with. I'd never read a book quite like this one. The narrator Saba's dialect is very strong throughout the course of the novel and the fact that no speech marks are used whenever a character talks certainly baffled me to begin with. However, after a while I finally managed to struggle through it to the point where it didn't bother me and I actually started to appreciate the way the author was making her book unique by doing it. This book also doesn't have any chapters and, instead, has an image of a crow - who I'm suspecting is Nero, Saba's bird friend ;) - separating sections which, again, I didn't mind so much about after a while.

One of the main reasons I loved this book so much - and that managed to make me dismiss my earlier scepticism - was all down to the action and adventure. I just love good ol' stories where the main characters go on a dangerous quest - especially if it's a unique, dystopian one brimming with action and adventure! The fighting scenes in this book were one of my favourite parts! The author managed to write them in a way that was clear but never boring which I really appreciated. The dystopian setting she created was also a very enjoyable part of the book. Saba's world is definitely one of the most haunting visions of the future I've ever read about! I really hope in book two we'll be able to find out even more about how it came to be that way.

The characters were also a big factor too, of course! To begin with I didn't think I'd get along with Saba - the way she treated her little sister, Emmi, instantly made me weary of her. She was so horrible to her! However, I really loved watching their relationship develop and grow - it was rather adorable. Due to this, I really came to admire and adore Saba. She was strong, brave, fiery... Just the sort-of heroine I love! She also had that more vulnerable side to her which made me love her even more. You could see the emotional affect some of the incidents in the book had on her and how she tried to stay strong and focus on fixing the problem instead of running away. It really showed that she was both strong inside and out. I also adored Jack. He's just how I like my love interests. ;) Arrogant, cocky, secretive, mysterious and, of course, swoon-worthy. I really enjoyed - or should I say, found it frustrating! - that Saba denied her feelings for him. It really helped add another layer to the story. Nero too! As already mentioned, Saba has a crow companion named Nero. He was certainly a very loveable and wise creature! I always seem to love animal sidekicks in books...

To conclude, Blood Red Road, though it did take me a while to get into it, was a really unique, thrilling and exciting edition to the YA dystopian genre. The setting was intriguing, the characters well-developed, the plot a rollercoaster of action and adventure and the romance a great sub-plot that helped hook the reader even more. I really loved this book overall and can't wait to get my hands on book two, Rebel Heart, to find out what's going to happen next! Especially since that ending left me hanging! Jack?!?! I definitely recommend you read this if you love action/adventure novels and/or dystopia. Also, if you find the format hard to get over, try to struggle through! You do settle into it after a while! Maybe don't read this if you're looking for an easy read though - the dialogue does need some concentration. :)

FIVE STARS! xD

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

PS: How nice is the cover for Rebel Heart by the way?! *_* ;)
