Should Cassie Clare Really Be Writing MORE Shadowhunter Books?!

Saturday 21 December 2013
My answer: Yes. She most definitely should.

It's been nearly a year since Cassie Clare announced she would be writing a new Shadowhunter series - The Dark Artifices - and, during that time, there's been a lot of debate. Some people (like me) are totally for it. They love the idea of a new series that will let them delve deeper and prevent them from having to wave goodbye to a world they love so much, while others are more hesitant... Isn't the Shadowhunter world going to become tiring? Too overused?

To those people I say:

Clare has spent so much time creating a fantasy world that we, as readers, find easy to escape into and become completely and totally lost in. It takes skill for an author to paint such a vivid picture of a world utterly different from our own and, if they aren't ready to leave it yet or feel like there are still many more tales to be written about it, who are we to say what the right thing is to do?

Personally, I'm excited about delving into another Shadowhunter adventure! Especially since, this time around, it will be mainly from the perspective of a fully-fledged Shadowhunter! Also: Why shouldn't Clare introduce us to another swoon-worthy fellow? We've had Jace, we've had Will... Maybe it's time to make the hunky duo, a trio! ... Though I highly doubt that this Julian could hold a candle to Will! -.~

Los Angeles, 2012. It’s been five years since the events of the Mortal Instruments when Nephilim stood poised on the brink of oblivion and Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs lost her parents. After the blood and violence she witnessed as a child, Emma has dedicated her life to the eradication of demons and being the best, fastest and deadliest Shadowhunter since Jace Lightwood. Raised in the Los Angeles Institute, Emma is paired as a parabatai with her best friend, Julian. As Emma hunts those who caused the death of her parents, the trail they’re following leads back to those they’ve always been taught to trust. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with Julian — her closest friend and, because he is her parabatai, the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. [To be released sometime in 2015]

You can see my review of (The Mortal Instruments) City of Bones here and The Infernal Devices book reviews here, here and here!

For those of you adamant that you do not want to read any more into the Shadowhunting world, you at least have the series Clare is co-writing with Holly Black, The Magisterium Series!

What do you think? Are you excited about The Dark Artifices? Why? Why not? Are you ready to move on or are you pretty happy delving deeper into this fantasy world? What about The Magisterium Series? Sound like your thing?

Happy Reading,
Rachel xoxo

  1. Um. Yes! I am so so ready for The Dark Artifices. I can barely wait for the last book in TMI let alone a new series! I love the world she's created and she definitely shouldn't give it up for anything.

I didn't even know she was co-writing a series with Holly Black?! Ommggg. Even more excited now. I'm definitely going to look into it a bit more. Thank you for sharing! :D

    1. Yay! I'm so excited for it too! I prefer The Infernal Devices over The Mortal Instruments but I'm hoping to have that series finished before The Dark Artifices comes out! xD

    1. I'm much more fond of TID than TMI too! I actually stopped reading one of the TMI books... City of Fallen Angels I think! I am planning on going back to it though! I'm seriously hoping she's a kick-ass heroine!

Thanks for the comment, Althea! :D

  4. I might be in the minority.. but i haven't really read many of her books. I read TID where I liked the first two but hated the last book, clockwork princess. I've also read City of Bones and disliked it.. so I don't know.. I am hoping that maybe this third series would be a bit different? but i might go back for the mortal instruments, especially since i really enjoyed the movie which was surprising.

    1. I can easily understand why Clockwork Princess has such a mixed reaction - I really didn't enjoy the epilogue! At. All. I loved City of Bones - it's a real shame you didn't! I am getting a little bored with the further books in the series though! :3

If you do go back to the TMI books I hope you enjoy them! Thanks for the comment! :)

  5. Hmmm.... I'm sort of excited, but I don't feel that excited. Her books aren't my favorite, but they're not what I hate either. I will have to say it's pretty overused, but didn't Erin Hunter do the same thing, only with a lot more books?

    1. Oooh, I don't know Erin Hunter! What type of books does she write? :O You never know, you may end up loving The Dark Artifices! I'm really excited just 'cause it sounds a little bit different from the others!

      Thanks for the comment! :P

  6. Argh, I'm in the minority here. Whilst I ADORED The Infernal Devices – partly because of Will! – I didn't enjoy TMI… which is weird, considering it's her main series. TID was enough for me, but I appreciate how others want more. :) Would be lovely to see her try something different!

    1. TID is amazing - because of Will of course! - but I can see why people don't love TMI as much! I only semi-enjoy the series as a whole whereas I LOVE TID! At least you've got the Magisterium series!

      Thanks for commenting, Ruby! xD

  7. To be honest, Rachel, I don't want her to write anymore Shadowhunter Chronicles... :( I mean, I was okay with TMI, TID and TDA but then she said she had another series planned and it's called TLH. It will be set after TID and the characters will be the descendants of TID characters...I know that once you have created a fantasy world -- a world that is adored by many people, if I may add -- it is hard to let go. But I personally think she should venture out of her Shadowhunter world and write something new. I am not the one to tell that to an author actually, it's HER job and she should write something that suits her. However, it never hurts to try new things out. Thank god she has that Magisterium series coming and I am totally excited for it as Holly Black is also my favorite author! :D

    1. There's going to be ANOTHER series after TDA?! Is it weird that I'm kind-of super excited that it could feature one of Will's children?! That would be so cool! If it's a similar time period to TID I wonder if I'll enjoy it like I did The Infernal Devices! I am curious to know if I'll become more tired of the Shadowhunter world as time progresses...

Yay! I hope you enjoy the Magisterium series! Thanks for the comment, Kezia! :P

  8. I'm not really sure about this one! I've had a discussion with Sunny on this one. Since I've only read City of Bones I can't really say whether it's a good thing or not. I see both sides of this argument. It would be amazing not to have to say goodbye to such an amazing series but yet as people say it can get a little overused and a little boring. I think it really is a leap of faith so it can either be good or not. I say Cassandra Clare should have a go at creating a new world that we'll all love.

  9. I love Cassandra Clare and the Shadowhunter world is not one that I am willing to say goodbye to. I don't think three is too many. I think that by introducing a new set of characters and a new storyline, It's a great way to keep the world alive. But I also think that it's in some ways risky because people may get tired of the whole thing. I think really it is either going to benefit or overuse the Shadowhunter world. But I'm excited and like you said, I'm going to put my faith in Cassie.
