Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson

Thursday 17 February 2011
"Lily isn't home ALONE - but she wishes she was. Looking after her three younger siblings is a lot of responsibility.

When Mum goes off on holiday with her new boyfriend and leaves Lily, six year old twins Bliss and Baxter, and little sister Pixie on their own, Lily is determined to keep the family together and show they can cope without any grown-ups. But when she fears their secret is going to be discovered, she decides they need a safer hiding place. What could be better than to take all the little ones for a camping adventure in the park? Plenty of space to run about, no flat to tidy, and surely no chance anyone will guess they're there...

LILY'S THINGS TO REMEMBER!

HOW TO LOOK AFTER MY BROTHER AND SISTERS

1. Make sure they eat three meals a day - and not just ice cream.

2. Keep clothes not too mucky.

3. Everyone must go to bed before midnight, especially Pixie.

4. Don't let them go to school in case they give away our secret...

5. Keep everyone safe till Mum comes back..."

Jacqueline Wilson is one of my favourite authors and when I heard of this book I instantly wanted it. Of course it did not disappoint, not one tiny bit. I knew I was reading a best seller as soon as I opened it.

Lily Alone follows the story of eleven year old, Lily Green who is left with her siblings when her Mum goes off on holiday with her new boyfriend, Gordon. I admire Lily for many reasons, one of them being the lengths she takes to feed her family. Another character who I like - I actually like all of her siblings - is Bliss. She is really shy and obedient and helps Lily out a lot.

I found this book a very emotional read, one which made me appreciate just how much I had. It isn't all sad though, you will find some funny parts in it - especially if Baxter is there! I can't describe how much I loved this book, it was FANTASTIC!!!

Rachel xx :)

  9. Oh... I'm not sure, maybe "I didn't want to be the eldest any more, looking after everyone. I seemed to do that even when Mum was around. I wanted someone to look after me."

I think this one is good because it shows how vulnerable and scared Lily is but also how she loves her siblings but can't look after them properly. :o)

  22. Lily Alone is a heartwarming book about a family who gets broken apart. Lily always wanted to be alone but she soon finds out that being alone isn't always so great. Their mum leaves Baxter, Bliss, Pixie and Lily all on their own with no one. Should someone be there? Maybe. Maybe not. Another great book from Jacqueline Wilson.
